My friend Cathy makes a "Best Of..." CD mix at the end of each year and quietly mails them out to her close pals without fanfare. They never disappoint. This year's mix came in the mail this week and includes this tune from Warpaint. One I'd never heard before. It sounds like padding around the house in socks and a t-shirt on a lazy Sunday. Or sitting in the shade of the porch on a warm Spring day. Basically, an instant fave.

Flashback Friday: Suburban Lawns & Jay Reatard

Here's a flashback of one of my favorite California "New Wave" bands, the Suburban Lawns. This track, from their self-titled 1981 release, is one of my all-time jams. I still have this 45. The first time I heard Jay Reatard's Blood Visions, it immediately reminded me of this song, Janitor. In the best way. Love!

Tuesday Tunes: California Love - Best Coast, Wounded Lion & The Touch-Me-Nots

I'm loving this new (long-awaited!) video for one of my major Summertime 2010 jams! Best Coast is having a real break-out year. In fact, I just saw that frontwoman Bethany Cosentino was named at #4 of the NME 2010 Cool List. Whoa.



I'm also loving this brand new video from LA's Wounded Lion for the single recently realesed by my friends at Trouble In Mind Records. Woot!



And, last but not least, my friends The Touch-Me-Nots have a brand spankin' new video out today! It was great to see these guys and grab some BBQ ribs with 'em while they were in town from Oakland for Gonerfest. Love 'em! This single's a fresh release from my friend Erin's label, Classic Bar Music.

July 2, 2010 - Crush: Gems in Los Angeles

 

Some friends of mine from Memphis are traveling to California this week to celebrate a birthday, enjoy a vacation and celebrate a new job opportunity. One of them has never been to California before (shock, horror!). So in the way I'm known to do, I put together a (long) list for them of my favorite places, things to see and do, and places to stay from San Diego to San Francisco and everywhere in between.  

Dwell also has a wonderful list of Los Angeles area diners and restaurants not to be missed. I was surprised at how many of them I've been to. Including the one pictured above, Swingers, at the Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel - one of my favorite places to stay (and eat) in L.A.

July 1, 2010 - Girl Crush: Best Coast

I am totally enamored with Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast. Not only does she serve up Beach Boys meet Jesus and Mary Chain style pop tunes about boys, but she gives mad props to my home state of California, has a cat named Snacks AND has the coolest tattoo ever (want. it.). The first cut off the new album is total ear candy to me. You can hear it here.

Peter, Paul and... Me!

The other night's show at the Hi Tone was amazing fun. I am such a huge fan of both Peter Case and Paul Collins, you can't even imagine. I love everything they've done. The Nerves, The Breakaways, The Plimsouls, Peter's solo stuff, The Beat... Wow! They are totally my pretend boyfriends (PBFs!). It was amazing to see them perform a few old Nerves songs together. 

When I asked them to pose with me for this picture after the show, Peter said, "Whoa! A picture with us, together? Yeah! You get in the middle and be Jack Lee." My heart just about leaped out of my chest.
